My public note on preparation

Disciplined, composed, formidable…

My daughters, one further down the path, the other on her heels, and young men like Will grew into those qualities and more over time. And, believe it or not, the thing that “turned” them that way was when they were sitting at the kitchen table looking at practice exam scores and realizing how thin the margin is when you’re aiming at medical school.

It was one of those pressure moments.

i.e., the kind where everything feels like it counts and something clicks.

All that cut through the usual panic about grades and performance was this:

“Difficulty is not a verdict. It is training.”

And just like that, the pressure shifted.

In this case, not because they were strangers to pressure. They had been dealing with it for years. But because they started to see it that way.

After that, they leaned in more as their preparation became intentional, which was anything and everything that cleared up their thinking, built skill on purpose, and took the emotional drama out of performance, especially in environments that reward comparison over clarity and speed over depth, and where pressure, handled poorly, can slowly turn performance into who they believe they are.

Now it sounds almost obvious.

But at the beginning?

It was not exactly obvious that you rebuild interpretation instead of chase visible validation.

Something that defined how they prepared - through the demands of their honours degree, athletics, community leadership, and eventually the long, unforgiving path to medical school.

I don’t know when that way of preparing will ever be formally packaged or named. But for a parent or mentor who needs that recalibration himself, or simply wants to articulate preparation better than slogans and applause allow, the place to begin is not pressure.

It is interpretation.

This is not “about” prestige directly.

It is about strengthening posture under strain.

But indirectly, that posture determines outcomes.

Just ask Mareya and Will...
