Some people who have spent years trying to control food with rules and discipline eventually notice something strange once the food itself changes. Not because the rules changed. But because the food did. For years these people have tried the usual things people do: counting calories, cutting portions, being “good” during the week and slipping during the weekend, trying harder each time the plan failed. But the harder they try, the more food seems to push back. Then something simple happens. Instead of focusing on restriction, the foods on the plate change: processed foods slowly disappear. In their place come whole foods, mostly plant foods, often raw, often simple, the kinds of foods people once ate without thinking much about it. It’s strange because it’s true. But as far as food habits go: There are only two things people usually notice at this point: 1. Meals that once triggered constant hunger start to feel satisfying. The urge to keep eating fades. Energy during the day becomes steadier. The body, which once seemed difficult to manage, acts as though it knows what to do. 2. Appetite changes once the plate fills with nutrient-rich plant foods. The body receives vitamins, minerals, fiber, and protective plant compounds that satisfy biological needs, and appetite settles. Some people find this surprising. And what makes it surprising is that they were not even trying to force it. They simply changed what was on the plate. From the gut - the body responds without overthinking it, simply receiving what it needs. Those are the moments when eating begins to make sense again. Go ahead and notice it for yourself. And speaking of that change in appetite: It reflects a simple principle about how the body regulates hunger. And while many complicated diet plans try to explain it, the idea itself can be understood in a very simple way. Health and healthy habits improve when nutrients increase relative to calories. And when people notice that change in appetite: They start to notice what happens once they add more fruits and vegetables and allow the body to reset.
